What to Look for in an Engagement Photographer (Before You Book)

Choosing your photographer is one of the most meaningful decisions you will make during your wedding planning process. Your photographer is not just there to take photos. They are the person who will be with you through some of the most intimate, emotional, and joy-filled moments of your wedding day. From quiet getting-ready moments to the energy of the dance floor, they are truly by your side for a large portion of the day.

One of the most important steps when choosing a photographer is actually connecting with them face-to-face. Scheduling a FaceTime or video call allows you to feel out their personality, communication style, and overall vibe. This is something I do with every couple I work with because it matters that you feel comfortable and at ease. If you genuinely like your photographer, it shows in your photos. When you feel relaxed and understood, your images will feel natural, joyful, and true to who you are together.

During that call, your photographer should make you feel heard and supported. They should be able to answer any and all questions you have — whether it is about timelines, lighting, locations, what to wear, or what to expect on the wedding day. No question is too small, especially when you are planning something as meaningful as your wedding. A great photographer will guide you through the process with confidence and clarity, helping you feel calm and excited rather than overwhelmed.

It is also helpful to pay attention to how your photographer communicates. Are they clear, kind, and reassuring? Do they explain things in a way that makes sense to you? Your photographer should feel like someone you trust, someone who can step in when needed and quietly support you throughout the day. When that trust is there, you are free to be present, knowing your memories are in good hands.

At the end of the day, beautiful photos start with connection. Choosing a photographer who aligns with your style, your energy, and your values will make all the difference, not just in how your photos look, but in how the entire experience feels.
